Magma Toys Newsletter - May 2008

Magma HQ is a bustling den of activity this month. We’re currently getting our act together for Passion (stand 235), making new retail friends (welcome sextoys.co.uk, Femin, Harmony, Orion and the others) and, of course, we're always looking into new ways of keeping passion hot.

In between all the hustle and bustle, we are still learning new things. For instance, it may come as a bit of surprise to learn that octopuses have interesting sex lives. Pre-eminent erotic filmmaker Petra Joy, kindly took time out of her busy schedule to let us know how her particular brand of erotica is enabling both men and women to enjoy watching sexy films. And we’ve learnt what happens when you send Passion Cards to unsuspecting friends.

Love,

The Magma Team

Magma Toys Newsletter May 2008 - Petra Joy - Passion 08 - Octopuses - Passion Cards

Octopus Love

If you know anything about Magma Toys, you’ll understand why we are very interested in finding out more about how you keep passion hot. It’s not that we are particularly meddlesome, it’s just that our surveys and other points of contact help us to create new toys and concepts to help you play.

So when we found out about Passion, the UK’s newest and most exciting adult lifestyle show, we took it as fate giving us a helpful hand to get to see more of you guys in person.

Octopus Love

On 24th and 25th May, stand 235 will be our little Magma home from home, where you can take the Magma ‘hot’ test to see if you and your partner are a perfect fit and other interesting things. As usual, we promise to get you hot under the collar and send your body temperatures rising.

Talking about passion, in our inimitable cheeky Magma fashion we’ve been having some fun with our Passion Cards. We’ve been sending Passion Cards to unsuspecting friends throughout the land. We haven’t destroyed any marriages or long-lasting relationships, but the results are very interesting. We’ll tell you more next month, but just to let you have an idea here are some of the more interesting findings:

  1. Girls called Jenny get more responses than girls
    called Pauline
  2. Nobody uses the telephone anymore
  3. Some of our friends are naughtier than others
  4. We now know how to start red-hot conspiracy theories

If you have not got your hands on our Passion Cards yet, don’t forget you can grab them for free from the Magma Toys website or by adding Magma as a friend and sending us a message on our MySpace page.

How did you get in to making adult films?

I have always been a very visual person. I was publishing photographs at the age of 12 and then did a masters degree in film studies and worked 20 years as a TV producer. My favourite subject has always been sex and I enjoy putting a woman’s view across in strong visuals. In 2003 I founded Strawberry Seductress - an erotic photo service for women and couples. I was often asked what films I could recommend and as there was hardly anything I liked, I decided to make my own. I had the ideas, the video equipment and some friends who were happy to let me film them playing – this is how “Sexual Sushi” was created, which has now become a female porn classic. My life has come full circle. I used to be active in the anti-porn movement in the 80s where I gave workshops for women and gave film study lectures at universities to analyse what image of sexuality and women these films convey. I am in a stage in my life now where it is not enough to be against something but I want to create alternatives. I am still against misogyny and anything that glorifies violence against women. But as a visual and sensual being I feel a distinct lack of images that turn me and other women on and I think we should not leave the creation of erotic visuals to men alone, because they will obviously always express their own, male desires rather than female fantasies.

What special qualities are you able to take advantage of as a female adult film director?

I don’t think that being female gives me a special quality as a director. What makes me special as a director is my creative approach to filmmaking, my artistic background and my focus on female empowerment and pleasure. I have seen erotic films by men and found some of the sequences extremely hot. Sometimes scenes shot by a female director leave me cold or even turn me off. So making sensual and creative films does not come down to gender but depends on the motivation and skills of the individual.

How is the industry changing to accommodate progressive directors?

It is a very slow process. Women and couples are ready for a new type of erotic film: sensual, creative and artistic. But the decision makers in the big distribution houses and the buyers for sex shops who decide what gets sold in the shops are still male. They often feel alienated by my genre: art-core rather than hard-core and do not believe that the market is ready for change and growth. I wish more buyers would let their customers choose which films they want to buy and stock my films next to the assembly line porn. I also wish there were more classifications available from the BBFC within the adult genre.

What needs to be changed to make adult films and novelties more appealing to women and couples?

It is simply a myth that women are not visual or do not like explicit visuals. But I think women need to see what they fantasise about rather than the scenarios that turn men on.

I choose to focus on female pleasure rather than just male satisfaction. I want to show the (female) audience that its not selfish but OK to be pleasured.

I find it exciting to show a variety of sensual play, so that the scenes are exciting and unpredictable rather than the average hard-core scene where the same positions and techniques are repeated over and over again. I also like to show men as objects of female desire.

If you could not do what you're doing now, what is likely to be your alternative career path?

I am still working as a photographer and writer right now, publishing in national and international magazines and doing erotic photo commissions for women and couples. I will focus more on creating documentaries again in the future if my erotic films will not be commercially successful.

Which outlets in the UK are currently stocking your films?

Among others, the “Harmony” stores in London and the “nice and naughty” shops.

If you can not find my films, then simply email me and I'll let you know where you can get them.

Octopus Love

If your lover should suddenly say that you’re as passionate as an octopus, there’s a good chance that, rather than trying to criticise you, they are just trying to let you know you’re just as hot as a rampant Phoenix

Octopus Love

A recent scientific study has found that octopuses (or should that be octopi?) have very interesting love lives that encompass gender impersonations, crimes of passion and acts of downright kinkiness.

Take Abdopus Aculeatus, for example, a jealous guy if there ever was one! Let’s imaging Mr and Mrs Aculeatus are at a party and she’s getting some serious attention from an octopus lothario: he’s laughing at her jokes, complimenting
the sheen of her tentacles and he can’t keep his eyes of her ink sac. Just what is poor abdopus to do?

Well, according to some clever people at the Berkeley University, who created this report, he’s not one to just have another Twiglet and ignore the amorous advances towards his wife.

On the contrary, it seems that he is more likely to grab the unwelcome interloper with his 10-inch (yes count ‘em, ladies) tentacles and strangle him to death. Apparently the legal system in the sub-aquatic world is fairly lenient when you kill your love rival.

The report goes on to inform us that some small randy male octopuses adopt feminine postures and mannerisms so they can trick their way into the lairs of the womenfolk in order to satisfy their more lustful urges. Whilst we don’t condone this type of behaviour at Magma, we can’t help but admire the ingenuity and laugh at the idea of an octopus in drag.

Note to reader: we think that we should be applauded for our ability to refrain from any cheesy references to a certain James Bond film
